Locality...
" What various objects scatter'd round us lie,
And charm on every side the curious eye!
"

...our Locality page deals with history out and about around the quaint market town of Faringdon and also suggestions of things to do and places to see in the surrounding area. See also our links page.

In this photo you will see the poppies on Faringdon Hill which are in full bloom, this makes for a nice walk from The Old Crown Coaching Inn, if you would like a picnic lunch to take with you please order this from our Inn Keepers Lee or Kate the day before. The views from the top are very pretty. Here is an excerpt from Henry Pye's Faringdon Hill poem:

"But as we gently tread the rising green,
Large, and more large extends the spacious scene;
Till on the verdant top our labour crown'd,
The wide Horizon is our only bound."

If this is still not high enough for you, you could always go and visit Faringdon Folly, which stands on Folly Hill, was built by Lord Berners in 1935 and is reputed to be the most recent folly to be built in this country. For more information about Faringdon Folly and a picture please visit our links page.

Faringdon House has some wonderful gardens which is occasionally open to the public and it is here that the Royalist troops made a stand when Cromwell offered terms and was refused.

All Saints Church offers some fine examples of Architechture and used to boast a beautiful spire, unfortunately this got blown up by cannon fire while the Civil war raged around.

Further Afield
May we suggest a visit to Oxford, there are open topped bus tours and College tours to go on. Or the Ashmolean Museum for some fine exhibits. Or if you have younger children a day out at the Cotswold Wildlife Park for a fun filled time.
